Jay police officer Steve Gould, right, clocked Shawn Gagnon, 14, of Livermore Falls going 31 mph on his snowboard Wednesday at Spruce Mountain Ski Area in Jay. Gagnon’s next run was 32 mph. The leader at 1:15 p.m. was Steven Sylvester of Livermore Falls on skis at 34 mph. The Jay Police Department sends an officer and a radar gun to the mountain every year during February school vacation to let skiers and snowboarders know how fast they are going, Spruce Mountain Manager Dana Allen said. So far this week, 12 kids are participating in ski school, he said. The cost is $10 an hour for lessons. The teachers get $8 and Spruce Mountain gets $2, Allen said. Spruce had already hosted a “big air competition” this week, he said.
