HEBRON — Hebron Academy is holding its annual “Pink Socks” campaign this month to raise funds for and awareness of breast cancer.

The varsity boys basketball and varsity girls hockey squads donned pink accouterments to their uniforms during games this month.

The varsity girls hockey team began “Pink Socks” four years ago to honor the late Sheyla Wide, who died recently. She was the mother of Hebron basketball forward Royce Finley, a member of the Class of 2012.

The girls based their campaign on a similar one they saw at another school. Varsity boys basketball players and coaches also decided to don warm-up shirts embroidered with “S.W.,” Wide’s initials.

“The program fosters school spirit and garners support from all areas of the community, including Hebron Academy scholar-athletes, parents, friends and even unexpected sources who help make it all possible,” Colin Griggs, varsity boys basketball assistant coach, said. “The crux of our “Pink Socks” campaign lies in celebrating and encouraging the cause while remembering those who have been involved in the fight, like Ms. Wide and her son Royce.”

The players in the first “Pink Socks” campaign wore only pink hockey socks, but last year added pink jerseys, which were donated by Kris and Theresa Aaskov of Falmouth, parents of twin daughters on the team.

The program expanded to “Pink in the Rink,” which has raised more than $3,500 toward the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition in Bangor.

“I am thrilled to celebrate Hebron’s fourth year of “Pink in the Rink,” Katie Coyne, varsity girls hockey head coach, said. “The girls have really taken hold of the idea and run with it, and it’s something that they look forward to every year. ‘Pink in the Rink’ is not only a memorable event, but it’s also a way for Hebron students to learn the invaluable lesson of service.”

Pink pops up often at Hebron Academy. This past fall, wearing pink socks in their game against Gould Academy in Bethel, members of the varsity girls soccer team raised more than $1,000 for breast cancer through bake sales and on-campus fundraisers.

The boys basketball and girls hockey programs have raised more than $1,200 in T-shirts sales and other fundraisers this month. All proceeds benefit the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition in Bangor.
