GRAY — The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for much of Maine for Wednesday through Thursday night with a forecast calling for up to 12 inches of snow in some places.
The warning states snow will overspread the region later today and into the evening. The storm is expected to produce several inches of snow between Wednesday night and Thursday night.
“A warm front will stall south of New England as low pressure forms along this boundary later today. The front will remain south of New England as the low continues to move slowly to the east Thursday. This will give the region a prolonged period of snow,” the warning states.
The forecast calls for 8 to 12 inches of snow, with higher amounts expected across southwestern Maine and southern and central New Hampshire.
The snow is expected to begin sometime in the late afternoon today.
For Franklin and Somerset counties the forecast says timing and snowfall amounts are less certain and a winter weather advisory may be issued for those counties later today.
According to the forecast the snow will wind down Thursday night as the low pressure system moves out to sea.
