Cam Sennick arrived at Mt. Blue High School a fully grown man at 14 years old, his 6-foot-5 frame and post-up skills an immediate fit in the boys’ basketball starting lineup.

He added a beard and muscle over the course of four winters, as many do.

His game never stopped evolving, either.

That journey was rewarded Friday when Sennick was named one of three finalists for Mr. Maine Basketball, awarded each year since 1990 to the outstanding senior player in the state.

Ten semifinalists were named Feb. 22 from around the state and from all enrollment classifications.

All three finalists, however, led their teams to a Class A regional final. Sennick is joined by Cole Libby of Bonny Eagle and Christian McCue of Hampden.

The winner will be announced Friday, March 9 at a banquet on the campus of Husson University in Bangor.

During Sennick’s career as a starter, Mt. Blue was 57-24 and reached the Eastern Class A tournament at Augusta Civic Center all four years.

Twice his teams were ousted in the semifinals, as a freshman by Lawrence and his junior year by Bangor.

Sennick saved his longest tournament run and one of his best career games for the end.

In the Eastern A quarterfinals against Brunswick, Sennick erupted for 29 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots.

Mt. Blue was unstoppable in a 72-47 victory.

Sennick keyed second-half rallies against Edward Little in the semifinals and Hampden in the title game.

The Cougars edged the Red Eddies, 52-49, but a layup with three seconds remaining gave the Broncos a 46-44 triumph in the final.

McCue, Hampden’s point guard, fouled out with more than two minutes remaining and his team up by seven points.

Mt. Blue tied the game on Sennick’s free throw with 30 seconds to go.

Despite being the focal point of smothering defensive efforts in the latter contests, Sennick averaged 18 points per game in the tournament.

He was the centerpiece of a stellar senior class that included Nick Hilton, Blake Hart, Steven Yardley and Eric Berry.

Sennick is in the running to be Mt. Blue’s first winner since the inaugural Mr. Maine Basketball.

Mike Adams, now the successful coach at EL, won the award as Mt. Blue’s big man in 1990.

The three finalists for Miss Maine Basketball also were announced Friday. They are Alexa Coulombe of McAuley, Mia Diplock of Cony and Meghan Gribbin of Windham.
