JAY — Smart Area Robotics Team members have three more major fundraisers planned before they head to the FIRST Robotics World Championship on Tuesday, April 24, in St. Louis, Mo.

The Spruce Mountain High School team earned the Rookie All-Star Award in March at the FIRST Regional Robotics Challenge in Massachusetts. It is the highest honor a rookie team can achieve, Mentor Dan Lemieux previously said.

The team is now raising money to go to the world championship in Missouri. Fundraisers already completed are “a very successful bottle drive, apple orchard day for Mary Howes, school dance and public supper,” Lemieux said in a release.

He asks that the community help the team finish strong with the fundraising efforts to enable the team to make the trip. Events coming up are a gate day at Verso Paper on Friday, April, 13; a car wash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 14; and a calendar raffle ticket sold through the month of April for the month of May.

Tickets for the latter are available from a SMART Robotic teammate or at the high schools in Jay and Livermore Falls. The Spruce Mountain Area Robotics Team members are: Denton Bilodeau, Sam Brenner, Tom Brenner, Shelby Bryant, Nina Chavez, Michael Chavez, Alexi Deering, Roger Duguay, Chloe Flagg, Adam Gettle, Ian Gingras, Michael Taylor Hampton, Ben Hartford, Dustin Jones, Megan Labbe, Jacob Luce, Tyler Ritter, an Erik Taylor.

“The team is highly indebted to its mentors,” Lemieux said. Members include Tony Flagg of F.A.T. Electric, engineer Fred Ouellette, Steve Gettle, forester and carpenter, Phil Maurais of Maurais Plumbing and Heating, teachers Dan Lemieux, Kym Bryant, Karina Escajeda, and Rob Taylor, and UMF student Jill Gingras.

“Thank you to all of the people who have sponsored us,” Lemieux said.
