BANGOR — Jordan Hersom of Leavitt and Patrick LaChance of St. Dom’s each will receive a $5,000 scholarship from the Maine Sports Hall of Fame at its annual banquet May 20.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame will induct eight new members at its 37th annual ceremony. The event begins at noon at Bangor Civic Center.

Inductees are Walter Abbott, Phillip Coulombe, Emily Ellis, Ed Guiski, Matt Hancock, Dennis Libbey, Howard Vandersea and Dana Wilson.

In addition, four scholar-athletes will be honored as recipients of $5,000 scholarships. Joining Hersom of Turner and LaChance of Raymond are Seth Sweet of Madison and Carylanne Wolfington of Hallowell.

Hersom won the 41st Fitzpatrick Trophy as Maine’s best senior high school football player. He maintains a 96 academic average. He was aa four-year starter in both football and basketball, where he notched both 1,000 career points and 1,000 rebounds. Hersom plans to play both sports at Springfield College.

LaChance ranks first in his class with a grade point average of 4.53. His athletic profile includes four seasons of cross country and three in outdoor track. LaChance has been accepted as an early-decision applicant at Brown University.

Tickets are $40 for members of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame and $45 for non-members. A reserved table for 10 is $400. Tickets may be purchased until May 13. Call 680-0914 for more information.

Mt. Blue lacrosse to hold golf tourney

WILTON — There will be a golf tournament at noon May 20 to support the Mt. Blue High School lacrosse team. The four-person team scramble will be held at Wilson Lake Country Club.

The $40 entry fee per person for 18 holes includes a barbecue lunch. There will be prizes. Proceeds will help the team raise funds for high-impact lacrosse helmets.

If you don’t golf, please consider hole sponsorships ($25) or item donations for a raffle (all donations are tax deductible). You may enter your own team. Otherwise, individuals or couples will be grouped according to handicap for fairest play.

Softball umpires schedule tourney

LEWISTON — The Andy Valley ASA umpires will hold a tournament June 9 and 10. Play is co-ed slow pitch and open class.

This will be an ASA-sanctioned tournament with one exception: Six malesand four females will be allowed to start, or teams may still start five of each.

LJAL opening day

LISBON — From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, come celebrate the Lisbon Junior Athletic League’s seventh-annual Opening Day at Lisbon High School.

The big day, which includes a visit from the Portland Sea Dogs mascot Slugger, starts with a 9 a.m. parade of all the LJAL’s baseball, softball, and T-ball teams. Immediately after the parade, there will be all sorts of fun activities for young children, students, families and friends, including recreational baseball and softball games, batting cages, pitching radar guns (how fast can you throw it?), bouncy houses, games and prizes, and face painting. Enjoy an array of grilled and prepared foods, along with beverages, and get in on the fantastic baked-goods sale, cholesterol levels be darned.

Founded in 1970, the LJAL is a nonprofit, all-volunteer youth baseball organization that administers Lisbon’s Cal Ripken baseball, girls softball, and T-ball leagues.
