LIVERMORE FALLS — RSU 73 directors voted unanimously Thursday to approve a one-year contract with the RSU 36 education technicians and secretaries.

The bargaining unit has been working on a contract that expired June 30, 2011. The school district has three years from consolidation to approve a new combined contract for each bargaining unit.

The new contract approved Thursday goes into effect on June 30, 2012, and expires June 30, 2012. The new contract is not retroactive, Superintendent Robert Walls said Monday.

It aligns individuals’ pay affected in the contract to bring it closer to counterparts in Jay that are covered under two Jay School Department contracts, Wall said. Jay’s contracts for the ed techs and the secretaries are three-year agreements that expire June 30, 2012, he said.

The district negotiation team will proceed now to negotiate a new, combined RSU 73 contract that will cover all educational technicians and secretaries in Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls schools.

The increases negotiated in the final RSU 36 contract are based on individual equalization of pay depending on the job that the person does, Wall said. He could not give an average of increase, he said.

“It varied to where they needed to move,” he said.

The new contract also eliminated vacation time and increased employees’ contributions to health insurance, he said.

RSU 36 secretaries had the ability to have up to three weeks vacation and under the new contract, they have the ability to have up to one week, Wall said.

Ed techs covered under the RSU 36 contract also had the ability to get up to three weeks vacation and under the new contract they do not get any, he said.

The contract also decreases the amount the district contributes to health insurance for employees.

The district paid 97 percent of a single plan and under the new will pay 89.2 percent, Wall said.

For employees with health plans covering two people, family and adult with child, the district reduced its contribution from 90 percent to 85 percent in the new contract.

Employees in these positions districtwide will all be working under an expired agreement as of July 1 until a new contract is approved.
