RUMFORD — Charles D. Chappell Jr., 63, of Wilton, died Tuesday, May, 22, at the Rumford Hospital after a courageous battle with ALS.

He was born May 21, 1949, in Watseka, Ill., a son of Charles D. and Martha Sanders Chappell Sr. On May 22, 1976, he married Linda Denney and they raised two daughters.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in the Vietnam Conflict. He was self-employed as a carpenter and truck driver. He had a favorite pet, a Pomeranian named Bayley.

Charlie was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was saved on Aug. 25, 2005, and has gone to heaven to be with Christ the Lord.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Linda of Wilton; daughters, Jen Speranza and her husband, James, of Dixfield, Carla Murphy and her husband, Kevin, of Dixfield, Julie Black and her husband, Joe, of Wilton and Corinna Latarte of Mexico; an adopted son, Frank Burgess of Mexico; eight grandchildren, Mariah, Bethany, Britney, Miley, Jacob, Owen, Cheyenne and Nathan; one great-granddaughter, Cheyenne; three half-sisters; and three half-brothers.

He was predeceased by his parents; and an uncle.

The family would like to thank the hospice unit at Rumford Hospital and Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for making Charlie’s last days as comfortable as they could.
