TURNER — Police are not sure what caused a noontime car fire that closed Route 4 for about an hour Saturday.

“The driver told the officers on the scene that she heard a pop toward the rear of her vehicle,” said Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Deputy Riley Bryant. “She pulled over to investigate and a passerby pulled up and told her to get out, her car was on fire.”

Driver Sally Meeks, 55, of Roxbury, wasn’t injured in the fire but her 1999 Jeep Cherokee was destroyed.

The fire was contained to the vehicle, parked on the side of Route 4 just north of Upper Street. Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters from Turner Fire Department closed Route 4 until almost 1 p.m.
