LEWISTON — The Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen has announced a partnership with the Androscoggin County 5210 Let’s Go! campaign, which encourages healthy lifestyle choices for children and families.

The Dempsey Challenge is a non-competitive run, walk and cycling fundraising event benefiting The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing. The event will take place Oct. 13 and 14 at Simard-Payne Memorial Park.

The event features a 5K and 10K run/walk and cycling distances of 10-, 25-, 50-, 70- and 100-miles. A free, family-friendly festival will feature a health and wellness expo and live entertainment throughout the weekend.

5210 is a nationally recognized childhood obesity prevention program, which aims to increase physical activity and healthy eating for children from birth to age 18. The message promotes five or more fruits and vegetables, two hours or less of recreational screen time, an hour or more of physical activity and no sugary drinks, more water and low fat milk a day.

“The 5210 Let’s Go! message is great for promoting healthy living to people of all ages in a variety of ways, not the least of which is helping reduce the risk of diseases such as cancer,” said Van Beckman, Let’s Go! Androscoggin coordinator. “We at Let’s Go! Androscoggin are proud to be partnering with the Dempsey Challenge in supporting the great work of The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing.”

The fourth annual Dempsey Challenge will incorporate 5210 Let’s Go! in the KidZone and Kids’ Fun Run during event weekend. The challenge will raise awareness with its own youth program, Positive Tracks, which promotes wellness and community building through outreach in schools and youth organizations in Androscoggin County.

“Positive Tracks and 5210 Let’s Go are such a great fit,” said Tish Caldwell, Dempsey Challenge fundraising coordinator. “We are really excited to be working together in our community and at this year’s Dempsey Challenge, encouraging and supporting healthy lifestyle choices for our youth and their families.”
