NORWAY – Voters overwhelmingly favored a merger of the Paris and Norway police departments’ in Tuesday’s annual balloting.

In a vote that was considered nonbinding, 430 voters said they favor combining the forces, while 117 said no.

Both towns are considering the move as a more cost effective and efficient way to provide police services to the two communities. Paris, however, has delayed a vote on the question while it continues to study the plan.

Town Clerk Shirley Boyce said the question remained on the Norway ballot even after Paris officials decided against pursuing the same question on their annual town election ballot because the ballot had already gone to the printers.

Selectman Russ Newcomb easily won another three-year term on the board with 492 votes.

Stephen Cummings was elected to another term on the Oxford Hills School District Board of Directors with 447 votes. Also, Jared Cash was elected to the school board with 344 votes. He succeeds Tim Ingram.

Top vote-getter of the day was Fire Chief Dennis Yates who garnered 530 votes.

Peter Toohey and Cynthia Reedy were elected to the Library Board of Trustees with 379 and 428 votes, respectively.
