RUMFORD — In the only two contested municipal races, Selectman Greg Buccina won re-election Tuesday night and Tom Bourret got the nod for tax collector/constable in unofficial results as of about 8:30 p.m.

The results came on a tape count from the ballot machines that Deputy Warden Brad Adley read to the candidates. The official count by hand was expected to be finished late Tuesday night.

The unofficial tally for selectmen had Buccina with 668 votes, and challengers Kevin Saisi with 224 votes and Mary E. McPherson with 181 votes.

Buccina said afterward that he is “grateful for the support of the voters.”

“It’s great to be alive and in Rumford, Maine, yeehaw,” he said. “Time to go back to work.”

Buccina is a Rumford native who lives on Maine Avenue. He is a 1974 graduate of Rumford High School, and 2005 graduate of the University of Maine at Augusta. He is also employed with Rumford paper mill NewPage Corp.

For tax collector/constable, Bourret had 807 votes, Jeremy Vashaw had 98 votes, Cynthia Kelley had 91, Amy Bernard had 57, and Kim Cocca had 38.

“Unofficially, it was a victory for myself,” Bourret said Tuesday evening.

“I am elated. I mean, I’m just in complete awe as far as the support I’ve had from the community during the whole process.”

Bourret, 39, a Rumford native who lives on Knox Street, has served as deputy tax collector since 2009.

In February, tax collector and constable John Giambattista resigned to take a job elsewhere and selectmen appointed Bourret to fill his remaining term.

“It’s been quite an experience,” Bourret said. “And I look forward anxiously to serve the residents of Rumford as an officially elected tax collector.”

Once the official counts are tallied on the selectmen’s race and the town meeting warrant results, selectmen were to convene a routine organizational meeting in the municipal building to elect officers and rules of order.

The board’s next meeting is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, June 21.
