LEWISTON — Windham’s camouflage uniforms didn’t hide its intentions for unbeaten Pastime in Saturday’s Zone 3 American Legion doubleheader.

First, Windham took advantage of the host’s shaky defense to end Pastime’s 29-game zone winning streak. Then, it pounded Pastime pitching for a dozen hits to pull off a shocking sweep of the two-time defending state champions.

Matt McLean went 6-for-8 with four doubles, a triple, one walk, four RBIs and and four runs scored on the day as Windham handed Pastime its first two zone losses since the 2010 zone tournament, 5-2 and 7-5, at Franklin Pasture.

“I think it’s huge. We had a rough weekend last weekend,” McLean said, referring to a doubleheader against Brunswick in which Windham blew late leads and lost both games in the eighth inning. “This will just help put us in the right direction.”

Windham (6-4) did a little bit of everything to make Pastime feel the pain of a lost weekend.

In Game 1, it used delayed double steals and a suicide squeeze to put pressure on a Pastime defense already dazed by five uncharacteristic errors.

“Our defense betrayed us today,” said Pastime coach Todd Cifelli, whose team made eight errors overall. “To this point in the year, our fielding has probably been the best thing that we’ve done. Windham took advantage by swinging the bats pretty well against our best pitchers. And they were great with their small-ball package and base running and squeezes.”

Three of the five runs Windham scored against Pastime starter Luke Cote in Game 1 were unearned.

Its first two runs, in the third and fifth innings, came home on delayed double steals in which the runner at first intentionally got caught in a rundown while the runner scored from third. The second run tied the game after Ben Wigant’s two-run double gave Pastime (8-2) a brief 2-1 lead.

Windham took the lead in the sixth after McLean’s first double of the day and an error put runners at first and third with one out.

Calvin Field laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to the first base side and beat the throw to first while McLean brought home the winning run.

McLean added a two-run triple in the seventh for insurance.

“I was just seeing fastballs and putting the bat on it,” McLean said.

Not that Windham starter Nate Boyle needed the extra cushion. After Wigant’s double, Boyle (seven innings, four hits, eight strikeouts, two walks) allowed only one more base runner to reach second base.

“Nate’s either on or off, and today he was definitely on,” McLean said. “He throws a good game when he’s on.”

“When he’s in a groove and his off-speed stuff is dipping out of the zone and keeping hitters off-balance, he’s unhittable,” Windham coach Nick Dubay said.

The same could not be said for Game 2 starter Shawn Francoeur, who surrendered a two-run double in the first and back-to-back RBI singles to Nate Berube (two hits) and Corbin Hyde in the second to put Pastime up, 4-1.

But after Windham answered in the third to tie the game on McLean’s two-run double and Jack Herzig’s RBI single, Francoeur settled down, retiring 10 of the last 12 hitters he faced.

“I think the big thing was slowing myself down,” Francoeur said. “I was going a little quick in the beginning. I slowed down my wind-up a little bit and got on top.”

Windham chased Pastime ace Corbin Hyde after just three innings, then got on top of reliever Joe Sullivan for two runs in the fifth.

“We faced all of their pitching and hit the ball very well,” Dubay said. “I think we’re starting to click, which is the perfect time, with two weeks left in the season.”

Cody Dube (3-for-4, double, two runs) led off with a walk, moved to third on McLean’s fourth double of the day, then scored what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch.

Herzig followed with another RBI single to score McLean and make it 6-4.

Windham tested Pastime’s defense with another squeeze attempt, but this time Pastime spoiled Joe Francoeur’s safety squeeze with a 1-3-2 double play. Sullivan, Wigant and catcher Alex Small teamed up to keep it a two-run deficit, at least temporarily.

Pastime’s eighth error of the day preceded Spencer Hodge’s RBI single off reliever Eddie Emerson that made it 7-4 in the sixth. Pastime managed a run off Joe Francoeur in the bottom of the inning on Emerson’s double, but Francoeur stranded the tying runs on base with a ground out to end it.

Tough as the sweep was to swallow, Pastime could take solace in the fact that it was still in first place in the zone and expects to have starters such as Matt Bowen, Mekae Hyde and Shawn Ricker back for the stretch drive.

“We still have a two-game lead in the zone. We’re at the halfway point. The kids that are here are working hard and we’ve got some reinforcements coming,” Cifelli said. “But today was Windham’s day and they were the much better team.”
