LEWISTON — Art Walk Lewiston Auburn’s third event, on Friday, July 27, will feature a free performance by Downeast Brass and an opening exhibition for Museum L/A.
The exhibit, “The Power of Music: 1860 to 1915” features images, instruments and other objects associated with that time period when Americans experienced the Industrial Revolution, the Civil War, several economic depressions and the threat of tuberculosis. But through it all, they maintained a passion for music.
The reception will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the museum at 35 Canal St., one block from downtown Lisbon Street, host site for Art Walk Lewiston Auburn.
The art walk in downtown Lewiston and Auburn will begin at 5 p.m. and continue until 8:30 p.m., with Downeast Brass giving a free concert at about 6-8 p.m. in Dufresne Plaza, adjacent to 84 Lisbon St. Rain site: L/A Arts DownStage, 10 Canal St. Alley.
The five musicians making up Downeast Brass share a wide range of musical styles and are all music educators. Band founder and arranger Dwight Tibbetts keeps the unique talents and skills of his colleagues in mind when arranging music for the group.
Featured artist for the July art walk is painter Stephanie Berry, who was exposed to art books and painting at an early age, courtesy of her mother, an elementary art teacher.
Berry attended Portland Art School after high school and decades later, after raising a family, decided to pursue oil painting. She took local adult-education classes and then workshops and classes with Janet Manyan, Debra Yoo, Colin Page, Carol Marine and Don Hatfield. She has attended a life drawing group at Bates College since 2003.
Berry continues to explore different styles of painting but favors a looser style and colorful palette. Oils remain her favorite and nearly exclusive medium. Her works include landscape, still life, portrait and figurative work. The things closest to home are what give her the most inspiration: her gardens, the changing seasons, family and favorite places.
Since 2005, Berry has been in several juried shows at the Turner Center of the Arts; Atrium Art Gallery/USM in Lewiston; Gallery 5, Lewiston; Boothbay Foundation for the Arts; and River Arts in Damariscotta. She participated in all five Lewiston Auburn art walks in the opening season and has small paintings at C. Periwinkle & Co. in Harpswell.
