LEWISTON — The first multimedia debate in the race for Maine’s open U.S. Senate seat is set for 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at the Franco-American Heritage Center.

Hosted by the Sun Journal, the debate is expected to be the first publicly broadcast debate of the election season. It will feature the top three contenders in the race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine.

Appearing will be Democrat Cynthia Dill, a state senator from Cape Elizabeth; independent Angus King of Brunswick, a former Maine governor; and Republican Charlie Summers of Scarborough, Maine’s secretary of state.

Moderated by local lawyer Michael Malloy, the debate will feature questions from the audience, both live and at home, as well as from Sun Journal staff.

Live video from the event will be featured on www.sunjournal.com. The newspaper also intends to allow online readers to interact with Sun Journal staff and each other during the debate via a live-chat interface.

Sponsors for the debate include the Franco-American Heritage Center, the Young Professionals of the Lewiston-Auburn Area and the law firm of Skelton, Taintor & Abbott.

The event is free and open to the public; doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Immediately after the debate, the audience is invited to join the candidates for a cash bar reception in the Center’s Heritage Hall.
