AUGUSTA (AP) — Legislators may be on the streets campaigning, but discussions are ongoing in the State House on how to cut expenses for MaineCare, the state’s Medicaid program.

The MaineCare Redesign Task Force, which meets Tuesday afternoon, is looking for short-term savings and long-term strategies to reduce the cost of the program.

The nine-member panel must first find $5.25 million for this fiscal year, as required by the budget that passed in May. But it is also looking for cost-cutting strategies for a program Gov. Paul LePage says is unsustainable over the long term.

Complicating the picture is a question over whether $20 million in MaineCare cuts approved by the Legislature earlier this year will be approved by the federal government. Those reductions are supposed to take effect next Monday.
