ORONO — Former University of Maine men’s basketball standout Troy Barnies has signed a professional contract to play for Salon Vilpas in Finland’s top division.
Barnies, an Auburn native who played for Edward Little High School, is coming off a very good season playing for Istanbulspor in Turkey. He averaged nearly 11 points, six rebounds and one steal per game while shooting 45.5 percent from the field in his first year as a professional.
While at UMaine, Barnies was named to the All-America East First Team and All-NABC District 1 Second Team as a senior after ranking ninth in the conference with 14.3 points per game and fifth in rebounding with 7.7 rebounds per contest. He led Maine to a pair of third-place finishes in conference play, including a 19-win campaign during the 2009-10 season.
