Dinner, auction for LMS football

LEWISTON — A spaghetti dinner and silent auction will be held Friday, Oct. 12, at the YWCA on East Avenue.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. Silent auction runs until 8 p.m.

Tickets are $5. Proceeds will benefit the Lewiston Middle School Blue Demons Football.

Franco vets to install officers

LEWISTON — The installation of officers for the Franco American War Veterans Inc. Post 31 and Unit 31 will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Lewiston Armory, Central Avenue.

The meeting will be held in the Drill Hall Room. A light luncheon will follow. Bring a snack or dessert to share.

Free legal info clinics

LEWISTON — The Volunteer Lawyers Network of Maine will offer a series of free legal information clinics at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Lewiston Public Library. After the lecture, there will be a general Q & A period. People with low incomes will have the chance to set up a meeting to speak with a volunteer lawyer.

St. Ann Sodality general meeting

LEWISTON — The Ladies of St. Ann Sodality of Holy Family, Prince of Peace Parish will hold their General Meeting in the church hall on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open at 6.

A short business meeting will precede the Halloween bingo games.

Admission is a bag of Halloween candy, which will be donated to the d’Youville Activity Dept. for distribution at Halloween by the residents.

American Legion monthly meeting

LEWISTON — American Legion Post 22 will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Lewiston Armory Senior Citizens Room, Central Avenue.

A luncheon will be served by Auxiliary members. There will be door prizes and a 50/50 raffle.

Presentation on blood thinners

LEWISTON — “Blood Thinners: Why We Take Them, How They Work and Important What-To-Knows” will be the topic of a presentation set for the Oct. 18 meeting of the Central and Western Maine ICD Support Group. The meeting will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute first-floor conference room. The program is being offered free of charge.

Sarah Melanson Green, pharmacy clinical coordinator at Central Maine Medical Center, will discuss oral blood thinner medications and why they are important to some patients. She will explain how the medications work, their potential side effects and when someone taking them should contact their care provider.

The Central and Western Maine ICD Support Group is for individuals who have an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. Family members and other support persons are also welcomed to attend.

Hormone therapy in breast cancer

LEWISTON — Estrogen makes certain types of breast cancers grow. Reducing the amount of the hormone or blocking its effects can reduce the risk of the cancer returning after surgery. That’s where hormone therapy comes in. Hormone therapy medicines can also be used to help shrink or slow the growth of some advanced-stage or metastatic breast cancers.

Mahesh Pandey, a hematologist/oncologist at St. Mary’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, will explain how hormonal therapy works, the different types of medicines used and potential side effects caused by the drugs at a free community presentation at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Lepage Large Conference Room, 99 Campus Ave.

‘Pre-Civil War Politics’ is topic

Federation of the Blind meeting

AUBURN — Mark Riccobono will speak to the National Federation of the Blind of Maine BETA students, parents and all interested professionals at a meeting to be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at the Career Center. This is informal, fun and free.

On Saturday, Oct. 27, he will be the national representative at the National Federation of the Blind of Maine’s Annual State Convention at the Fireside Inn, 1777 Washington St., Auburn. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with live music and a continental breakfast; there will be a break for a buffet lunch from noon to one and the program will adjourn between 4 and 5.

The day will focus on the cutting edge in what is happening in the field of work with the blind, authors, technology, how to apply for an NFB Scholarship, a presentation by Riccobono and door prizes. The registration fee is $25 at the door and includes the meals and more.

There will be room for exhibit tables in the meeting room at the Fireside Inn. Set up will begin just before 8 a.m. and people will be able to visit tables before the program, during lunch and after adjournment. The fee is $35. Spaces are limited.
