BOSTON — Jason “Jake” Orrin Phipps, 36, of Yarmouth, died unexpectedly on Friday, Nov. 2, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Jake was born Dec. 15, 1975, in Portland, a son of William and Patricia (Kelley) Phipps. He grew up in Yarmouth and graduated from Greely High School, Class of 1995.

Over the years, Jake enjoyed participating in Special Olympics, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and most recently kayaking. His passion however was harness racing. He was a member of the Maine Harness Racing Association and worked as a groomer for Don Richards and his grandfather, Orrin Phipps. He was a judge at the Maine State Truck Driving Championships. Jake worked at Yarmouth Lumber as a shop assistant. His open and uplifting personality followed him wherever he went and he would go out of his way just to say “Hello.”

Jake loved to be with his family — be it trucking with his Dad, going to church with his Mom, spending time with his nieces and nephews or hanging out with his brother and sisters — it was all good. His love for them was as big as the man and he will be greatly missed.

Jake is survived by his father, William H. Phipps and stepmother, Pam Rogers, of Yarmouth; his mother, Patricia A. Phipps of Windham; his sister, Kristalyn Phipps; his brother, Kevin Phipps; his sister, Laurie Balzanelli and her husband, Michael; his sister, Sheryl Gray; his grandfather, Orrin Phipps; three nieces; five nephews; and hundreds of friends.
