LEWISTON — Wilfred Roger Carver, known to friends and family as “Red,” died peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 14, at St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion.

Red was born Dec. 14, 1933, in East Auburn, to Elwood and Fleeta Avis Smith Carver. Red grew up in North Auburn, attended a one-room school and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1952.

He served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1956 to 1958 as a tank driver with the 10th Mountain Division. After returning home, he worked as a supervisor for 45 years at Knapp Brothers Shoe Manufacturing Co. in Lewiston and Derry, N.H.

On May 22, 1971, he married Joyce Sanderson, whom Red called “the love of my life, my best friend and buddy.” Joyce died on Feb. 20, 2005, which Red described as “the hardest day of my life.”

Red was an avid outdoor enthusiast, enjoying hunting, fishing and camping. He and Joyce spent much time camping and canoeing throughout Maine, particularly at Green and Richardson lakes. One of Red’s favorite hunting areas was along the narrow gauge railroad from Rumford to Rangeley Lake.

Red attended the Greene Baptist Church.
