LAMOINE (AP) — Maine’s attorney general says a state police detective who fatally shot an armed man who’d just killed his father and uncle met the legal requirements for use of deadly force.
The report released Friday says Detective Randall Keaten quickly opened fire, without time for voice commands, when he encountered the gunman running down a trail, possibly attempting to flank members of the tactical team, after the shootings on Oct. 23. The gunman, 27-year-old Leon Tilden, later died.
The report described chaotic moments after Tilden shot his father and his uncle. He was eventually spotted, armed with a shotgun, running into the woods.
The report said Tilden was armed with a shotgun and a handgun with several loaded magazines. A sawed-off shotgun was found near the spot where he fell.
