LIVERMORE FALLS — The reduction in state aid to RSU 73 could mean a loss in services, Superintendent Robert Wall said.

The district will lose $39,418 due to Gov. Paul LePage’s cut in state spending by $35 million. About $12.4 million of the cut will come from the state Department of Education.

The district’s share went from $5,493,215 to $5,453,796, a 0.2 percent cut, according to Maine Department of Education figures.

“We have put on a spending freeze,” Wall said. “This (curtailment) is a temporary order. It may be followed by more later on.”

Residents of Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls went to the polls three times before approving an $18,589,603 budget in August.

Because the operating budget was so tight due to reductions each time voters went to the polls, the loss of more than $39,000 could mean a decrease in services, Wall said.

“We didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “We’re not pleased, but that amount won’t break the budget.”

Wall said he has emailed all staff and board members outlining the curtailment.

Whether the issue is brought up at the Jan. 14 board meeting hasn’t been decided yet, Wall said.

“We won’t be looking at specifics,” he said.

The curtailment comes at a time when RSU 73 is about to begin developing its 2013-14 budget and seeking voter approval for a $1.8 million renovation project to house all high school students in Jay.
