LOWELL — An argument over snowmobile trails Saturday night resulted in one person being shot in the hand, Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, confirmed Monday.

The injured person, one of several people who entered the residence of the person they were arguing with, was in a private vehicle when located by Maine State Police troopers responding to the 10:30 pm. shooting.

“The offenders fled the scene prior to [the] troopers[’] arrival, but were located en route to the hospital,” said a summary of the incident posted by the Troop E barracks in Orono on the state police website.

The injured person was taken to Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln, Lt. Wesley Hussey, commander of Troop E, which covers Penobscot and Piscataquis counties, said Monday.

The “investigation revealed that some subjects were in a dispute [with] another subject over some snowmobile trails, when they entered the residence,” the Troop E post states, and McCausland confirmed. “The homeowner was armed … and fired at them as they entered. One of those entering was struck in the hand.”

State police Troopers Ben Campbell, Michael Johnson and Barry Meserve responded to a residence in Lowell, located just a few miles southwest of Burlington, along with deputies from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office and a warden.

“I don’t know any more details,” McCausland said.
