TOPSHAM — The Midcoast Symphony Orchestra will perform its second concert series of the season under Music Director Rohan Smith on at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Orion Performing Arts Center, Topsham. Peter Jenkin, noted Australian clarinetist, will perform Aaron Copeland’s Clarinet Concerto. The orchestra will also perform Richard Wagner’s Flying Dutchman Overture and Robert Schumann’s Symphony No.3 (Rhenish) in E flat major, Op.97.

Copeland’s Clarinet Concerto was originally composed for Copland’s good friend, Benny Goodman. The piece includes elements of jazz, in the form of angular melodies and syncopated, sometimes swung rhythms, and it is fun to listen for the intersections and blendings of jazziness with a more classically modernist style. Jenkin is not only a new music advocate, he is one of the top clarinet soloists in Australia, and his performance promises to be exciting.

Wagner’s Flying Dutchman Overture is a perennial audience favorite that musically tells the story of conflict between the human and the supernatural. The proximate inspiration for Schumann’sSymphony No.3 (Rhenish) symphony is said to have been inspired by the splendid Gothic cathedral in Cologne.
