AUGUSTA — A 20-year-old Mount Vernon man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Saturday night in the Kennebec County town of Readfield, just west of Augusta.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland in a press release Sunday afternoon reported that Gabriel Soucy, a passenger in the vehicle, died at the scene.

The driver of the 1993 Ford F-150 pickup, a 17-year-old boy from Wayne, was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for injuries suffered in the crash. The injuries are not considered life-threatening.

McCausland noted that the driver’s name is not being disclosed because state police have not yet decided whether they will charge him; the names of juveniles charged are typically shielded from the media.

Speed and distracted driving “are being considered as factors in the crash,” McCausland reported. The truck was traveling east on Lane Road and failed to stop at a three-way intersection, leaving the road and slamming into a tree head-on, according to the press release.

The results of the investigation will be given to the district attorney’s office for review for possible charges.

Road conditions in the early evening when the crash occurred were described as wet, with fog limiting visibility. The crash was reported at about 5:30 p.m.

Trooper Dane Wing from the Skowhegan state police barracks is the primary investigator. Readfield Fire Department, Winthrop Ambulance Service and Central Maine Power Company assisted at the crash scene. State police reconstructed the crash with deputies from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office assisting with forensic mapping of the scene.
