PORTLAND (AP) — A winter storm is slowing traffic and causing vehicles to slide off roadways with the National Weather Service calling for 3 to 6 inches of snow across much of Maine.

The storm moved into southern Maine on Wednesday morning, resulting in slick roads and prompting Maine Turnpike officials to lower the speed limit to 45 mph for a couple of hours during the morning commute.

Forecasters say the snow will continue throughout the day before coming to an end Wednesday evening, with the heaviest amounts expected along the coast.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for southern, central and eastern Maine.
