1920 – 2013

CONCORD, N.H. — Elizabeth “Betty” Fiske Hathaway Barrell died Dec. 24, at the age of 92. She was a resident at Havenwood in Concord, N.H. for seven years.

She was born in New York City, N.Y., on Feb. 24, 1920, the child of Leander and Edith Hathaway.

Betty graduated from Stephens Jr. College, Columbia, Mo. in 1942, where she was a member of the Tau Sigma Tau Honorary Art Sorority. In 1972, at the age of 50, she graduated from the University of Maine, with a degree in elementary education.

In September of 1943, Betty married her husband, W. Dwight Barrell, in Gulfport Field, Miss. They had six children, one of whom died in infancy.

Betty was active in the East Congregational Church, where she was a member for a number of years. She loved photography, dancing, sewing, crafts and gardening and was involved for years with the East Concord Garden Club. She loved to proudly talk about her children and grandchildren. She was known for her hats that matched every outfit that she wore and her ability to break into song and dance at a moment’s notice!

She leaves behind five children, Patricia Torrey of Sorrento, Richard Barrell of Gardner, Mass., Marjorie Barrell of Stoddard, N.H., Joanne Sargent of Providence, R.I. and Catherine Chapin Salk and her husband, Rick, of Providence, R.I. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Megan Wellman and her husband, Michael, Ben Barrell, Aaron Barrell, Amy Torrey, Emily Worsnopp and her husband, Will, Sarah Barrell, Zoe Sargent, Jonathan Sargent and Freya Sargent. Betty also leaves two stepgrandchildren, Kara and Curtis Salk; and two great-grandchildren, Kacey Wellman and Lexi Barrell.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, Dwight; and her younger brother, Leander Russell Hathaway Jr.
