1920 -2013

WATERVILLE — Mary (Sulya) Konieczko, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Lakewood Continuing Care facility in Waterville, at the age of 92. After a long and wonderful life, she faced the challenge of living with Alzheimer’s disease. She did so with great humor and dignity.

Mary was born June 14, 1920, in North Monmouth, daughter of Charles and Tekla (Piela) Sulya. She was raised on the family farm with eight brothers and sisters and attended North Monmouth and Monmouth schools, graduating from Monmouth Academy in 1937. After graduation she worked at Sunset Lodge andin local textile mills until her marriage to Stanley Konieczko. She traveled with her husband while he served in the United States Army. After his discharge from service, Mary and Stanley settled in North Monmouth, where they raised a family of six children. In 1946 they purchased lakeside property and maintained Twin Springs Camps, as housekeeping cottages, on Echo Lake in Fayette. Her children continue to manage the family business which is in its 67thyear of operation.

Her family will always remember her as having a passion for life and the outdoors. Earlier in life she enjoyed hunting and fishing. Her interests included reading, gardening, refinishing and reupholstering furniture, braiding and hooking rugs and so much more. She will be remembered as a proud and loving mother who enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier parish until her health prevented her from attending Mass. She was particularly fond of the St. Stanislaus summer chapel and often spoke of the North Monmouth community’s effort in building the church. She was a past member of the North Monmouth Community Club and the Echo Lake Association.

 

She is survived by her children, Peter and wife, Carol, of Augusta, Daniel and wife, Judy, of Topsham, Robert and wife, Robin, of Kingfield, Judith and husband, Howard Whitten, of Sidney, Dr. Lynne King of Oakland, and Julie and husband, Peter Christensen, of Snoqualmie, Wash. In addition, she leaves 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Her parents, brothers, sisters and her beloved husband, Stanley, predeceased her.
