MEXICO — The Board of Selectmen will continue discussions on the possibility of reopening the Mexico Health and Fitness Center at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 22, at the Town Office.

Selectmen voted Oct. 23, 2012, to close the center after its operator failed to pay the liability insurance on time. However, during that meeting, Selectman Reggie Arsenault said there was still the possibility for the fitness center to reopen with a new operator.

During the selectmen’s meeting on Jan. 8, the board listened to resident Rich Vitale present a tentative business plan that would allow the fitness center to re-open, with plans to include rooms for weightlifting and cardio-exercise, the possibility to implement new martial arts and karate classes and a flat rate of $30 a month for membership.

Chairman Richie Philbrick invited Vitale to Tuesday night’s meeting and asked him to bring a detailed schedule of how many hours he plans to keep the fitness center open, whether he would pay on a monthly or weekly basis and whether there would be any volunteers.

Other items on Tuesday night’s agenda include discussion on replacing the cemetery sign with the town of Roxbury. 

The cemetery sign was one of three installed recently in October of 2012 at cemeteries in the Roxbury-Mexico area. On Oct. 13, 2012, police discovered that the sign at the entrance to Old Frye Cemetery beside Swift River Road at the Mexico town line, was torn down and broken in half. The sign was jointly purchased by Roxbury and Mexico and installed by Mexico workers.
