WILTON — Town Manager Rhonda Irish will update selectmen Tuesday on cleanup efforts started at the Wilton Tannery by the town’s Public Works Department.

The board meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Town Office.

Prior to the environmental cleanup expected to start this spring, members of Public Works have been cleaning out the building. After the tannery closed in 1996, the building was used for storage from 2003 to 2010. The town acquired the property in 2010 for unpaid taxes.

After snowstorm cleanup is finished and on off-days, members of the crew have cleaned out the building, she said.

It helps meet the town’s share of the costs to make the site ready for commercial development. Their work is “in kind,” counting toward the town’s total cost on the project.

The town received a $200,000 federal Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields Grant last fall. The grant requires a 20 percent match from the town, or $40,000. The town’s portion can be reduced through credit for work done on the property by town departments.

About $1,000 has been spent for the disposal of removed materials, but most of it has been recycled, she said. The department is expected to provide more work, including some outside work, over the three-year grant project.

Working with Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, requests for proposals for an environmental consultant are being completed, she said.

In other business, the board will hear a report from David Olson of the Wilton Free Public Library and an update regarding recycling and the Transfer Station. They’ll also set budget meetings and workshops and consider a goal-setting workshop for 2013.

Before the meeting, the board will tour the Western Maine Development Group on Weld Road at 4 p.m.
