PHILLIPS – Selectmen are asking residents to pay extra attention to town plow trucks and snow removal efforts.

At their Tuesday night meeting, selectmen discussed whether the municipality should modify the parking ordinance or post signs prohibiting parking in the areas used by snow plows and school buses.

Road Commissioner Ward Bredeau said problems were infrequent but there are hazards for the drivers, especially when visibility is poor and roads are slippery. Although motorists are not allowed to park in any of the snowplow or school bus turnarounds, Town Manager Elaine Hubbard noted that some new residents may not know where these sites are. When snow accumulates, vehicles parked in the town’s right of way presented a safety problem.

“We also need to make sure Fire Department vehicles and ambulances have access to all roads,” Hubbard noted.

To date, the town has not had to take legal actions or tow a vehicle.

Selectmen decided they should revise the current parking ordinance and possibly put signs that are visible to motorists. Selectmen also could designate specific hours and months that parking is prohibited. Bredeau said he and municipal officials have had to deal with only one individual who had parked a camper in the snowplow turnaround.

In other news, selectmen appointed Planning Board alternate Teresa Sargent as a full board member. She replaces Ray Gaudette, who recently was elected to fill Lynn White’s selectman’s seat. Jim Moran was appointed as an alternate Planning Board member.

The Budget Committee is searching for an additional candidate, according to committee Chairwoman Sylvia Lambert.

Selectmen also addressed payment plans with two residents who forfeited their property to the town because of unpaid taxes. Selectmen are authorized to allow those residents to pay back taxes and pay one year in advance. They agreed to allow both petitioners another two months to meet these obligations.

Hubbard said if the debts are paid in full, the town will return ownership through a quitclaim deed.
