LEWISTON — The wooden carving of the Virgin Mary will continue to sit high above the stage at the Franco-American Heritage Center.
And for most events in the grand performance hall, it will remain uncovered and visible to the audience.
Some supporters of the center were worried that the carving might be obscured permanently after reading a report of the March 30 concert at the center by comedian Bob Marley.
Tickets for Marley’s two performances went on sale Friday and began with brisk business.
Louis Morin, the center’s executive director, said the Madonna might be covered for the Marley show. It has been covered for other events in which there may be a clash with the statue’s meaning.
The wooden Madonna is a remnant of the center’s history as St. Mary’s Church.
Morin said he would like to install a system in the church that could easily obscure the statue on rare occasions with a curtain.
“I am looking for grants to do this exact thing,” he said Friday.
Currently, raising such a curtain requires time and precarious work on a lift.
