TAUNTON, Mass. — John M. Hagberg, 78, of Taunton, passed away peacefully, Sunday Jan. 27, in Taunton, following a long battle with Parkinson’s and stroke syndrome.

He was born Jan. 12, 1935, in Livermore Falls, a son of the late John W. and Delema (Poirier) Hagberg. He was a resident of Taunton for the past three years and a former longtime resident of Maine and Franklin, Mass., where he raised his children.

John was raised and educated in Lewiston, where he was a 1952 graduate of Lewiston High School and he earned a degree in industrial electricity from Maine Technical School. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was discharged in 1955.

John worked as an engineer for IBM in Boston, were he enjoyed a 27 year career. In his younger days, John enjoyed hang gliding, flying his ultra light plane and was an avid golfer for many years.

He is survived by his four children, John M. Hagberg Jr. of Taunton, Pam Sobocinski of South Carolina, Sharon Silvernail, also of South Carolina, and Stephen Hagberg of Springfield; a sister, Elaine Botka; eight grandchildren, Riley and Holly Hagberg, Haley and Courtney Sobocinski, Danyka, Jack and Michele Silvernail and Joseph Straccia; and his former wife, Elizabeth A. (Boutilier) “Betty” Hagberg of Haines City, Fla.; he also leaves his longtime companion, Florence Cronkhite of Jay.

He was the brother of the late Alice Peavy.
