BUCKFIELD — Students at Buckfield Junior-Senior High School are creating large, colorful Valentine’s Day cards for more than 100 residents of Victorian Villa nursing home in Canton, and the Spurwink School and a rehabilitation center in Lewiston.

“I’m really glad we’re doing this,” said freshman Alexis Bennett of the girls’ basketball team.

Teammate Ashley Campbell agreed.

“This is a good time to do it. Some people don’t get valentine cards,” she said. “And it’s good for team bonding.”

The idea for the nursing home cards came from National Honor Society student Elizabeth Strout, who works part time in the dietary department at Victorian Villa Rehabilitation and Living Center.

“Some don’t have family members who visit,” she said. “I wanted some involvement as part of our service projects.”

Annette Caldwell, an eighth-grade math teacher, said the groups wanted to not only give back, but were thinking about the mental health of the community.

“We wanted to do something for our community to make people realize they haven’t been forgotten,” she said.

Some of the bright pink or red giant valentines are for specific people who like flowers, cats, butterflies, dolls or country music.

One card depicted a Volkswagen bus and long-haired man, and the lyrics to a popular 1960s songs. It was for a former hippie.

Other cards are directed to no one in particular; they’re just meant to acknowledge them.

The Student Councils from the middle and high schools also designed and created some of the valentines, which will be delivered this week.

“The valentines are just for them,” Bayley Caouette, a National Honor Society member, said.
