POWNAL — While winter storm Nemo was an inconvenience for many, for the Trail Monster Running Club it saved the day, making it possible for the club to host its White Out snowshoe race.
Race Director, Ryan Triffitt had been preparing to change the race to a trail run as of Tuesday, but word of the impending storm restored hope for the participants.
“We needed about two feet of snow,” Triffitt said, “and that’s what we got.”
The three-race annual series, now in its third year, was expecting the largest field of racers in its history, with most racers registering early in the year.
“It definitely takes a leap of faith in the weather and the director as well,” Triffitt said.
With the snow arriving on cue, Triffit said a volunteer had to go out early yesterday to try to pack down a 3.5-mile trail that wasn’t flagged until before the start Sunday.
Triffitt was happy with the coincidence that brought his much-needed snow. Within the Trail Monster Running Club, he is nicknamed Snowman. His birthday fell on Friday with the arrival of Nemo.
