The University of New England may have been one of the hottest teams in Division III going into the second round of the NCAA tournament, but it didn’t take long for Amherst to cool the Nor’easters off in its home gym.
Amherst limited UNE to 19.6 percent shooting from the floor to advance to the sectionals of the NCAA D-III women’s basketball tournament with a convincing 71-34 win Saturday night in Amherst, Mass.
The loss snaps a 20-game winning streak for UNE, which ends its season at 25-5.
Bridget Crowley and Megan Robertson teamed up to dominate the paint for Amherst (28-1). Crowley led the way with 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots, while Megan Robertson added 12 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.
Beth Suggs led UNE with 10 points and eight rebounds while Kelly Coleman added nine points and eight boards.
The Jeffs closed the first half with a 14-4 run to break away from a 16-16 tie. Cheyenne Pritchard’s three-point play kicked off the run with 8:27 left in the first half. UNE went more than five minutes without a field goal, then saw Pritchard hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left to give Amherst a 30-19 lead at the half.
Robertson scored the first six points of the second half to extend the lead to 17 before the Nor’easters finally got on the board on a Coleman layup 3:25 into the half. A Beth Suggs jumper would cut the deficit to 16 with 16:50 to go, but UNE would go the next eight minutes without a field goal as Amherst pulled away.
