LEWISTON — A small fire in a condemned apartment building at 172 Pine St. was quickly doused by firefighters Tuesday night.

No one was injured and the cause was being investigated.

First-floor tenant Alhana Martin, 20, said she and her boyfriend were in their living room when he awoke and thought he heard someone attempting to enter the apartment.

When he investigated, she said, he discovered a doorway on the second floor leading to the attic was on fire. He threw a pan of water on it while she called 911 and they left the building shortly before 9:30 p.m.

Martin said the building had been condemned in February and she, her boyfriend and her two young children, who were not there Tuesday night, had until Monday to leave.

Capt. Wallace Veilleux of the Lewiston Fire Department said the second-floor apartment was vacant and the fire was small and quickly extinguished.

Veilleux said firefighters cleared the scene at 10 p.m., but Fire Inspector Paul Ouellette remained to try to determine a cause.

The American Red Cross was on scene to assist the occupants.
