PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Brother Normand R. Goudreau, S.C., 68, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, R.I., died after a courageous battle with cancer on March 21, at Philip Hulitar Hospice Center.

He was born Oct. 11, 1944, in Central Falls, R.I., the son of the late William and Cora (Chagnon) Goudreau.

Brother Normand entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Sept. 4, 1960 at Harrisville, R.I. He pronounced his first vows in Harrisville in 1963, and his perpetual vows at Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket, R.I., in 1969. In August of this year, he would have celebrated his 50th anniversary of Religious Profession.

Brother Normand availed himself of every educational opportunity presented to him and thus completed a bachelor of arts degree at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., in 1967, a master’s in education at Rhode Island College in 1975, a master’s degree in theology and religious education at St. Michael’s College, Colchester, Vt., in 1985, and an MEd in school administration from the University of Vermont in 1991.

Brother Normand served in assignments as a teacher in New England at St. Andre’s School, Biddeford, Sacred Heart School, Sharon, Mass., Sacred Heart School, Andover, Mass., St. Peter’s School, Lewiston, Christ the King School, Burlington, Vt., Northwest Catholic Elementary School, Pascoag, R.I., and on three different occasions at Mt. St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, R.I.

In 1994, after his educational career, he moved to the Provincial House in Pascoag, R.I., where he was a master gardener, craftsman, artist, cook, and general handyman. He utilized his skills in refurbishing most of the rooms of the residence.

In 1999, he spent a semester at a sabbatical program in Rome, Italy.

Brother Normand is survived by his sister, Beatrice Choquette of Florida; his sister, Pauline Lima and her husband, Edward, of Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Gerard and Roger; and his sister, Rita.
