OXFORD — The town has applied for an interim loan of almost $14 million to begin paying for the new wastewater treatment plant, Town Manager Michael Chammings told selectmen Thursday.

On Wednesday, the town applied for a $13,725,000 loan to begin work on the treatment plant once the Maine Department of Environmental Protection finishes its review of the plan.

Chammings said the town has applied for rural development grants that could offset part of the cost of the plant. If that happens, the town won’t have to take out the full loan amount. If the town doesn’t get the grants, the current loan will be transferred to a permanent loan of about $19 million to pay the full cost of the project. The interest rate is less than 1 percent, he said.

The town is awaiting a response from the DEP.

The plant would be built in Welchville village off Route 26.

At Thursday’s meeting, selectmen unanimously approved a liquor license and casino license for the Oxford Casino without discussion.
