AUBURN — A local couple was unhurt — but looking for a new apartment — after a stray bullet struck their Elm Street apartment building, went through the bathroom wall and landed in their bathtub.

Christopher Roy and his girlfriend, Katelyn Hanscom, were asleep in the bedroom next to the bathroom when the shot woke them at around 1 a.m. Thursday. Roy said he happened to go to bed early that night or he likely would have been in the bathroom at the time of the shot.

“The other thing is . . . a couple of degrees difference would have been right in line with our heads when we sleep,” Roy said. “It could have very easily gone into our bedroom.”

Auburn police charged Alisha Turner, 30, with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon. According to police, Turner said she was getting ready for target practice the next morning and didn’t realize the 9 mm handgun she was handling was loaded. At some point, police said, she pulled the trigger, sending the bullet through the wall of her Main Street apartment, across the street and into the wall of the Elm Street apartment.

A neighbor called police when he heard the shot. Police tracked the bullet’s trajectory to the Elm Street apartment and checked on Roy and Hanscom, but neither police nor Roy and Hanscom realized the bullet had gone through the wall and into the bathroom.

Roy said he got up at 6 a.m. and discovered a hole in the bathroom wall, a bullet hole in the shower curtain and a bullet in the bathtub.

“It’s good fortune for everyone involved that no one was injured,” Auburn police Lt. Timothy Cougle said.

Roy called the experience “pretty intense.”

The couple had been considering a move to Brunswick. They’ve sped up those plans.

“Kate and I this evening are going to look for a new apartment,” Roy said Friday.
