MOUNT VERNON — The cause of a Sunday morning fire that destroyed a business and home on Bean Road is still undetermined.

An investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s Office was expected to return to the scene Monday to help determine the cause, said Assistant Fire Chief Tony Dunn.

The fire is believed to have started in the first-floor workshop of owner Eric Whitehouse, who operates a kitchen cabinet business — Whitehouse Woodworks — from the site and lives on the second floor of the large, two-story building. The building was about seven years old.

Whitehouse told firefighters he had worked in the workshop Saturday until evening.

Firefighters were called to the large two-story building at 591 Bean Road about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Dunn said.

Whitehouse was woken by smoke detectors and escaped the fire with his dog. His wife was in Portland, Dunn said. No one was injured, but everything was destroyed. The home and business were insured.

The American Red Cross was called Sunday to help the homeowners, he said.

When firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed. There were no problems fighting the fire, Dunn said. The department was there until about 8:30 a.m.

Mutual aid from Vienna, Readfield, Fayette, Wayne, Manchester and Belgrade departments helped the Mt. Vernon Fire Department, Dunn said.
