RANGELEY — The Rangeley School Board voted by a narrow margin Tuesday to retain the assistant principal position.
The outcome required calculation of weighted votes, a procedure not needed with clear majorities.
Many teachers and some parents spoke in favor of retaining the position for its value to students and its useful continuity for the school community since the board is looking to hire a new principal and superintendent.
Tom Philbrick, the current assistant principal and athletic director, spoke in favor of retaining the office, which also handles disciplinary issues.
The vote was taken after the board voted down a motion by Steve Dudley to table the issue until after a principal and superintendent are hired.
The board voted by consensus to move discussion of the 2013-14 budget to the already-scheduled budget meeting April 2. An extra meeting is already scheduled for March 28 to interview the two finalists for superintendent.
The board also accepted the second readings of the Bullying and Cyberbullying in Schools policy and the Administrative Procedures for Bullying and Cyberbullying, and waived the request for a third reading.
“We now have a clear bullying policy,” Chairman Pam Ellis said.
Faculty member Kate Philbrick announced a blood drive from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, April 1, at the school.
Ellis welcomed new board member Tom Rideout from Magalloway Plantation, who replaced Carol Hall, who recently retired.
