PORTLAND — Good Theater will close its 11th season with a return engagement of the Maine premiere of A. R. Gurney’s hit play, “Ancestral Voices,” April 3-14. The play is set in Buffalo, New York in the years leading up to World War II. As told through the eyes of young Eddie, this sweet, touching and very funny play deals with three generations of family members as they navigate a scandal in their very waspy upper-middle class way. The politics of the day are also reflected as the family faces their own issues as well as the issues of a changing world.

“Ancestral Voices” stars Good Theater artistic director Brian P. Allen as Eddie, Bob McCormack as Harvey, Lee K. Paige as Jane, Jocelyn Lavin Pollard as the grandmother and Good Theater co-founder Stephen Underwood as the grandfather. Wil Kilroy will play Harvey at select performances. “Ancestral Voices” is in the style of Gurney’s “Love Letters” with the same wit, and a few of the same characters from his play, “The Dining Room.”

Allen, who also directs the play, had this to say about the production: “I fell in love with this play the minute I read it. The piece is so funny and very moving. The play spoke to me. Eddie’s take on the family situation is priceless, much to his parent’s dismay. Audiences warm to the very real nature of the piece as they do to the other characters in Gurney’s works.”

Performances for “Ancestral Voices” are at 7 p.m. Wednesdays ($15) and Thursdays ($20);  at 7:30 p.m. Fridays ($20) and Saturdays ($25); and at 2 p.m. Sundays ($25).
