MEXICO – The Police Department received two grants to help pay for seat-belt enforcement and patrol all-terrain vehicle trails.

Lt. Roy Hodsdon said the department received a $3,000 ATV grant last week from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife that will run from April until the end of July.

“The grant will allow us to patrol the local trails and teach ATV safety to the youth and their parents,” he said. “Everyone under the age of 18 has to take the course.”

Hodsdon is an ATV safety instructor for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The department has been receiving the ATV grant for “the last four years or so,” he said.

Hodsdon said that the department also received a grant called “Click It or Ticket” from the Bureau of Highway Safety.

“That grant was worth a little over $2,000,” he said. “The grant is to help with seat-belt enforcement. We’ll be able to go out, night and day, and make sure people are driving with their seat belts” buckled.

The “Click It or Ticket” grant, which the department has received for the last five years, is part of a nationwide campaign for enforce the use of seat belts. The grant will cover enforcement from the end of May to the end of June.
