AUBURN — Five organizations that do community work in Lewiston and Auburn will explain their efforts at a program sponsored by the Androscoggin Historical Society at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the society’s headquarters on the third floor of the County Courthouse at 2 Turner St.

Presenters will be Shawn Wright of the Rotary Club, Shawn Holt of the Exchange Club, Harvey Buzzell of the Lions Club and Lee Klarman of the Boys and Girls Club. There also will be representatives of the Sons of Union Veterans and the Daughters of the American Revolution, to give an overview of what lineage societies do in the way of service.

Each presenter will give a 10- to 15-minute history of their group and its current work. The meeting is open to the public without charge; donations will be accepted. An elevator is available.

Bev Robbins, an AHS board member who is organizing the program, said: “Service club membership is shrinking across the nation but the organizations are still alive and well in Lewiston-Auburn. More people would join if they realized what the service clubs do.”

She added, “Our community supports a healthy diversity of service clubs and other nonprofit groups that provide substantial volunteer and financial support. Most are trying to enroll younger members who want to be involved in the community.”
