BANGOR — Police responded to the report of a hand grenade discovered by Bangor Public Works crews at the corner of Davis and Main streets late Tuesday morning.
Sgt. Paul Edwards said crews were working in the area and came across what appeared to be a hand grenade, and police were called at about 10:30 a.m.
The grenade was found in a grassy area on Davis Court near the side of a cement building, according to Edwards.
The sergeant said it was unclear how the grenade got to the location on Davis Court where it was discovered. The case remains under investigation.
The department’s bomb team responded and removed the hand grenade safely, Edwards said, and it was placed in a containment vessel about noon.
Later Tuesday afternoon, Edwards reported that the grenade had been safely destroyed by Bangor police’s bomb team.
The grenade was functional and contained a blasting cap but was void of any other explosive powders, the sergeant said.
“It wouldn’t have been a huge explosion [had it gone off] because it was void of powders,” Edwards said.
The intersection was temporarily closed to traffic, but was reopened after the grenade was contained. The nearby Dunkin’ Donuts and CarQuest stores were not closed during the incident.
