PHILLIPS — Police may have thwarted a burglary attempt Saturday while patrolling Route 142.

Deputy Sandy Burke noticed a man at the door of an abandoned home as he traveled the road, according to Lt. David Rackliffe of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. Burke went back to speak with the man, who told Burke he was a grandson of the homeowners and was there to take pictures of the place.

There was no camera but there was a roll of cable at his feet making the officer suspect a potential metal theft, Rackliffe said.

Burke was not able to prove the man was taking the cable so he couldn’t charge him. The man’s name did match the name of the homeowners, he said.
