AUBURN — Crews will close Turner Street from Jolene Drive to Center Street next week while they blast a granite ledge and remove a dangerous knoll in the road.

Auburn Project Engineer Tony Beaulieu said the work would focus on the ridge of granite ledge that creates a small hill on the road between Cornell and Colby streets. Residents have complained that that the knoll hides cars turning onto Turner Street from oncoming traffic.

“It’s a safety improvement to that section,” Beaulieu said.

Beaulieu said crews would begin drilling in the road on Monday, and should begin blasting on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Then they have to haul out that ledge and fill the areas back in with gravel,” he said. “That whole process should take a week, Monday through Friday.”

Local traffic will be allowed past Jolene Drive but the road will be closed between Colby and Cornell streets. Residents living north of Colby Street should use Center Street to access their homes.

Crews will be blowing whistles to warn neighbors when blasting is set to begin, he said.

“They’ll definitely blow horns and make sure the area is clear,” he said.
