DIXFIELD — The Dixfield League of Riders will hold its first Motorcycle Swap Meet from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 11 at the American Legion hall.

Ed Ellis, director of the Dixfield League of Riders and first vice commander of the local Legion post, said he got the idea from Saracens Motorcycle Club in Turner, which hosts swap meets for motorcycle parts once a year.

“I asked everyone else in our motorcycle group if we could have a swap meet and everyone seemed interested,” Ellis said. “We’ve already contacted a bunch of people and hope to have a good turnout.”

Ellis said he and the rest of the Dixfield League of Riders have put up posters “everywhere from Bethel to Mechanic Falls.”

“We have more than 150 posters out right now,” Ellis said. “We’ve put them up as far down as the Togus Veterans hospital in Augusta.”

The swap meet will take place in front of the American Legion hall, with 16 8- by 10-foot spots open for motorcycle enthusiasts to set up items for sale. The outdoor spots will cost $25, according to Ellis, while the indoor tables will cost $15 to rent. The Legion hall kitchen will cook hamburgers for those who attend. All money raised will go toward the American Legion and the League of Riders.

“We’ll probably kick 10 percent of what we make over to the hall, and put the rest toward our motorcycle club and the different charities we support,” Ellis said.

As of Friday afternoon, Ellis said he had heard from four groups interested in renting spaces outside, including Norsemen Cycles of Bethel and resident Doug Duguay.

Ellis said he hopes to bring back the swap meet once a year, depending on the turnout on May 11.

“It’s a great way to help out the Legion and get people from outside of the region to Dixfield,” Ellis said.
