PARIS — Police say a man who stole a car from a Farmington home and crashed it on Buckfield Road on Monday escaped a search team.

Officer Timothy Libby said Tuesday that while running radar on Route 117 at around 8:45 a.m. Monday, he clocked a car coming into Paris at 69 mph in a 45 zone. Libby turned to follow, and the speeding car hit a vehicle, then crashed on a lawn at the corner of Route 117 and Emery Avenue.

The driver, who Libby described as a while male in his early- to mid-20s, ran into the woods. The car caught fire on the lawn, but Paris firefighters quickly extinguished it, Libby said.

Maine State Police and Oxford County Sheriff’s Office personnel assisted in searching for the man, but were unable to find him.

Libby said the Farmington couple who owned the car hadn’t realized it was missing until around the time of the accident.

The incident is still under investigation.
